How to Get Rid of Stuff Floating on Top of Your Pool
Anything floating on the water surface has not yet made contact with the skimmer or filter. The fastest way to remove it is mechanically, before it sinks or breaks apart.
A fine-mesh skimmer net removes floating particles more completely than a standard leaf net. Work slowly across the surface in one direction rather than pushing water around, which spreads the debris. Skim first, then treat — adding a clarifier to a pool with material still floating on the surface is less effective because the product works on suspended particles, not surface film.

How to Get Rid of Pollen in a Pool
Pollen is the most common cause of a fine yellow or greenish film on the water surface, especially in spring. It is light enough to float indefinitely and fine enough to pass through many standard filter cartridges without being captured.
Skim the Surface Before Adding Any Chemical
Skim the pool first. Pollen sitting on the surface is easier to remove physically than chemically, and removing it before adding a clarifier means the clarifier can focus on what is suspended in the water rather than what is still floating.
Add a Clarifier and Run the Filter
Add a pool clarifier at the label dose, then run your filter continuously for 24 hours. The clarifier binds pollen particles into clumps large enough for the filter to catch. Clean or backwash the filter at the end of the cycle. Repeat if the water is still hazy.
Increase Filter Run Time During Pollen Season
In spring, run your filter 10 to 12 hours per day instead of the standard 8. Pollen accumulates faster than typical debris, and a standard cycle may not turn over the water volume often enough to keep pace.
How to Remove Fine Dust and Dirt from Pool Water
Fine dust and dirt usually settle on the floor rather than floating, leaving a gray or brown film that reappears every few days even after vacuuming. The pattern is a sign of ongoing airborne contamination, not a chemistry problem.
Brush the walls and floor to push settled particles back into suspension, then run the pump for at least 2 hours. A clarifier added before the pump cycle speeds clearing. If dust returns within a day or two, the source is still active — nearby construction, dry landscaping, or prevailing winds. Gray or White Particles After Shocking the Pool

Why Are Particles Coming Out of Pool Return Jets?
Return jets should deliver clean water. If you see fine white or gray particles coming out of them, the filter is adding debris to the pool rather than removing it.

Sand channeling or degraded sand is the usual cause. Backwash thoroughly first. If particles continue, the sand bed needs replacement, typically every 5 to 7 years.

DE in the pool means a filter grid has cracked. Inspect all grids and replace any that show damage. After replacing, add fresh DE through the skimmer at the correct dosage for your filter size.

What Causes White Flakes or Gritty Specks in a Pool?
White flakes that feel gritty and collect at the waterline or on the floor are calcium carbonate scale, not debris. They form when calcium hardness climbs above 400 ppm or pH stays above 7.8 for extended periods, causing dissolved calcium to precipitate out of the water.
Test calcium hardness first. If it is above 400 ppm, partial draining and refilling with fresh water is the most practical correction. A sequestering agent slows further scale formation but does not dissolve existing deposits. Brush the flakes into suspension and run the filter to remove them, then rebalance the chemistry.

Vacuuming removes what has already settled but does not stop what is adding particles to the water. If they return quickly, the source is still active: pollen season is ongoing, a filter is degraded, or a chemistry imbalance is causing particles to precipitate.
