For a 12,000-gallon pool that needs a +3 ppm correction with 6% bleach: 12,000 × 3 × 0.0017 ÷ 1 = 61 fl oz

Why bleach doses run lower than expected

Bleach starts losing strength the moment it is bottled. A 6% bottle that has been on a hot shelf for six months may only deliver 4.5 to 5% sodium hypochlorite, so the actual ppm increase comes in lower than the math predicts. How to Add Bleach to a Pool Safely

Test the pool before dosing

The dose depends on the gap between your current free chlorine and your target. Skipping the test means dosing blind, which is the most common cause of accidental overshoot. Pools where CYA is unknown or above 80 ppm should be tested fully before any chlorine addition, since adding bleach to an over-stabilized pool wastes product. Pour slowly in front of a return jet

Walk the deeper end of the pool with the pump on and pour the measured dose slowly along the return jet path. This disperses bleach into circulating water before it can sit in one spot. Concentrated bleach pooled in one area can stress vinyl liners, fade painted surfaces, and stress equipment seals if it gets pulled into the pump. Do not pour bleach into the skimmer

The skimmer routes directly to pump intake. Concentrated bleach moving through the pump at high concentration accelerates wear on seals, gaskets, and metal components. Pour into the pool body, not into the skimmer.

Retest after one pump turnover

After the dose, let the pump run for one full water turnover (typically 6 to 8 hours) before testing again. Testing too soon reads partially mixed water and often looks like the dose did less than it did. If the new reading is still below target after a full turnover, dose again in a smaller increment.

Is Pool Bleach the Same as Chlorine?

Yes, the active ingredient is identical. Plain household bleach and pool-grade liquid chlorine are both aqueous sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). What changes between products is the concentration, which is what drives the dose.

Household bleach is typically sold at 5.25%, 6%, or 8.25% sodium hypochlorite by weight. Pool-grade liquid chlorine is 10% to 12.5%. The active chemical is the same, but pool chlorine carries roughly twice the sodium hypochlorite per gallon. That is why a +1 ppm correction takes about 17 fl oz of 6% bleach versus 8.5 fl oz of 12.5% pool chlorine in 10,000 gallons.

Bleach vs other chlorine products

The same equivalence does not apply to other "chlorine" products. Trichlor tablets, dichlor granules, and calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) shock are different chlorine compounds. Pools larger than 20,000 gallons

A 25,000-gallon pool needs about 1.3 gallons of 6% bleach for a single 3 ppm correction, and outdoor pools typically need this kind of correction every 1 to 3 days during peak season. The bleach cost adds up, the weight gets impractical, and pool-grade liquid chlorine at 10 to 12.5% becomes both cheaper per ppm delivered and easier to handle.

Outdoor pools with no cyanuric acid

Without cyanuric acid (CYA), sunlight destroys about half of pool chlorine within 17 minutes of direct exposure, and an outdoor pool with no stabilizer can lose up to 90% of its free chlorine on a sunny day. Bleach stored above 75°F

Sodium hypochlorite degrades exponentially with temperature. The decomposition rate increases by a factor of 3.5 for every 18°F rise in storage temperature, so a 6% bottle stored at 95°F loses strength roughly six times faster than one stored at 60°F. A bottle that sat in a hot garage for the off-season may have lost 30% or more of its rated chlorine by the time you open it.

Pools already using trichlor or dichlor tablets

If your pool runs on stabilized chlorine tablets, CYA climbs every week from the tablets themselves (trichlor is 54% CYA by weight, dichlor is 57%). Does bleach raise pool pH?

Sodium hypochlorite has a pH of about 11 to 13, well above the pool target of 7.0 to 7.8. Each dose temporarily raises pool pH at the point of contact. The long-term pH effect is smaller than the chemistry suggests, because the HOCl reaction releases hydrochloric acid that neutralizes most of the alkalinity over time. The bigger pH driver in most pools is CO2 outgassing, not the bleach itself. How long does bleach last on the shelf?

Unopened 6% bleach loses about 20% of its chlorine strength per year at room temperature, and faster in heat. Stanford EHS recommends weekly preparation for working concentrations, and PubMed research found 13.6% sodium hypochlorite lost 17% strength after 360 days at 7°C. Can You Shock a Pool With Bleach?

Yes, plain unscented bleach can deliver a shock dose, but the volume gets large quickly. A breakpoint shock typically targets 10 times the combined chlorine reading, so a pool with 1 ppm CC in 10,000 gallons needs a +10 ppm free chlorine push, which is roughly 170 fl oz (1.3 gallons) of 6% bleach. Does Bleach Kill Algae?

Bleach kills algae the same way any chlorine source does, by raising free chlorine to the level required to oxidize the algae cells. Light green algae typically clears at a free chlorine level of 10 to 12 ppm sustained for 24 to 48 hours, which a bleach shock can deliver in pools where the volume is manageable.
